Why Board Diversity is Good Governance
The Sport Australia Sports Governance Principle 4: and the Office of Sport Sport Governance Framework recognise Board Diversity as a clear driver of good governance practices.
The board of a State Sporting Organisation is the decision-making body at the highest level of organisational leadership, boards play a critical role in creating an organisation that prioritises, supports, and invests in diversity, inclusion, and equity.
Boards that look, feel, and understand the face of modern Australia are more effective, more deeply connected with their sporting communities and have a much better chance of attracting and retaining the best employee talent.

Over 25 State Sporting Organisations participated in the SSO Professional Development Webinar on Wednesday 30 March 2022 on the Importance of muscle memory - Building Organisational Resilience for State Sporting Organisations.
Emerging from the COVID pandemic provides State Sporting Organisations an opportunity to look back and identify what worked, what didn’t and what they might do differently next time there is a serious business disruption. However, it is also an opportunity to consider how to make your organisation more resilient to the increased occurrence of business disruption and disaster situations.
Operational resilience is the ability to respond to operational peaks and troughs, recover from adversity and learn from the experience, stabilise, and grow. Building resilience is like training a muscle, it can be strengthened. It involves behaviours, thoughts, mindsets, and actions that any SSO can develop.
Over 30 State Sporting Organisations participated in the SSO Professional Development Webinar on Cybersecurity Practices for Not for Profit organisations.
Cyber security is the practice of protecting your organisation’s information, your organisation’s electronic systems and digital information and reducing the likelihood of a breach. While it is not possible to prevent data breaches from occurring in 100% of cases, the webinar presentation will outline steps you can take to minimise the likelihood of a breach occurring and the extent of harm caused.

First developed in 2018 as part of the Running Your SSO resource on the Office of Sport website, the Sport Governance Capability Framework (Framework) was developed to improve and support good governance practices, and systems within sporting organisations across NSW. It targets Boards, Directors, Office Bearers, members of Committees, volunteers, and paid staff of NSW State Sporting Organisations (SSOs) and State Sporting Organisations for people with a Disability (SSODs).
-
Ian Fullagar was engaged by the Office of Sport to review and update the Framework following the release by Sport Australia of updated Sport Governance Principles in August 2020.
-
Ian will discuss the review process and findings and explain that given that sports and their boards operate differently and vary in size, structure, and maturity, sport boards and committees are encouraged to apply the Framework and customise the resources in their own organisational context and to reflect their own needs.
-
This approach is considered good governance.
