Diversity and Inclusion

Sport and active recreation have the power to change lives and promote social connection within our community.

On this page

NSW is a richly diverse state, with a mix of cultures, backgrounds, personal circumstances and characteristics. The sporting landscape of our state should reflect the exceptional diversity of our society.

The Office of Sport is committed to helping to create opportunities for inclusion in sport and active recreation so every person in NSW can participate throughout their whole life.

First Nations

The Office of Sport understands the significant role sport has in bringing First Nations communities together.

Sport provides a powerful opportunity to contribute to community identity and cohesion, as well as being a focal point for engagement and achievement.

Meaningful engagement with First Nations staff, communities and stakeholders can provide mutual benefits such as innovation in policy and program delivery, diversity in decision making, increased cultural safety and increased participation in sport and active recreation.

People with Disability

The Office of Sport recognises that disability is broad, diverse and can be invisible. People with disability receive the same physical, mental, and social benefits from participating in sport and physical activity as any other participant. However, evidence shows that people with disability participate sports less than people without disability.

The Office of Sport is committed to ensuring people with disability have equal information, choice, and opportunities to participate and be included in all aspects of sport and recreation.

Our approach to disability inclusion in sport is to collaborate across the sport sector and other stakeholders, to breakdown known and emerging barriers to participation, and explore opportunities to make sport a welcoming and safe environment for inclusion, accessibility, and connection for all people.

People from Multicultural Communities

The Office of Sport recognizes and values the diversity of our NSW community and celebrates the significant role that sport plays in transcending cultural boundaries and fostering strong and resilient communities.

We are committed to ensuring that all members of our community have every opportunity to participate in sport and active recreation in an inclusive, fair and safe way.

We will continue to work with stakeholders in our local communities, and the sport and active recreation sector, to meet the needs and interests of people from multicultural communities.

Women and Girls

Women and girls must be recognised for their contribution, valued for their diversity and able to participate in sport at all levels in environments that foster a strong sense of belonging.

While an incredible amount has been accomplished, achieving lasting gender equality in sport requires consistent effort over many years to realise sustained population-wide impact.

The Office of Sport is committed to supporting the next wave of young females on their journey to the top of sport as well as ensuring more women and girls can participate in fun, safe and inclusive sporting environments.
