Why is Sydney Academy Athletics Track closed?

The Office of Sport’s first priority is the safety of track users.

Due to damage to the track surface making the track unsafe for use, Sydney Academy Athletics Track was closed in December 2023.

When will the track re-open?

The Office of Sport is investigating the cause of the damage.  

Any remediation works, and associated timeline, will be determined based on the outcomes of the investigation.

The track will remain closed until the remediation works are complete.

What alternative athletics facilities are available for users?

A temporary six-lane 400 metre grass athletics track is available on Oval 1 for Little Athletics clubs and school sports carnivals, user groups and casual visitors.  

The designated throwing and jump areas adjacent to the closed athletics track remain open for use.

What times are the temporary athletics facilities open?

* All times are subject to change due to bookings, weather and track maintenance.  

What field events can be done on the closed athletics track’s in-field?  

The designated throwing and jump areas adjacent to the closed athletics track can be used for the following field events:  

  • High Jump  
  • Long jump  
  • Triple jump  
  • Pole vault (must be booked through Athletes Corner)  
  • Shot put  
  • Discus  

How do casual users make a booking?  

No bookings are required however training must be undertaken during the opening times listed above.  

Casual users are advised to check temporary athletics facilities availability with the Sydney Academy of Sport before visiting.  

Where can track users find updates on weather closures?  

Updates on weather and other closures will be posted on the Sydney Academy of Sport Facebook page
