The NSW Government has delivered on its promise to provide $7 million for the construction of a new grandstand at the redeveloped Fairfield Showground.

The $10 million project, which includes a $3 million investment from Fairfield City Council, will see a 1,000-seat grandstand featuring tiered seating, change rooms and amenities, kitchen, bar and canteen facilities, ticket booth and social and VIP viewing areas.

The grandstand will be built next to the existing Parklands grandstand overlooking the newly created elite turf sports field.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer and for COVID Recovery Scott Farlow said construction of the new grandstand is a big win for Fairfield.

“The new grandstand will help the redeveloped Fairfield Showground become one of the leading community sport and recreation facilities in south west Sydney,” Mr Farlow said.

“The NSW Government is committed to providing our region with world-class sport and recreation facilities.”

Acting Minister for Sport Geoff Lee said the NSW Government is delivering on its commitment to improve the quality and quantity of sports infrastructure across Sydney.

“It is vital people have safe and accessible sports infrastructure in their communities so we can inspire healthy lifestyles and help people enjoy their sport,” Mr Lee said.

“Projects like the new grandstand at the redeveloped Fairfield Showground will boost sport across south west Sydney and also stimulate the local economy through jobs and investment.”

Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone said the new grandstand will provide a high-quality viewing experience for spectators.

“Fairfield Showground is all about people. This redevelopment is opening up this former harness racing track to the community for the first time in more than 60 years,” Mayor Carbone said.

“We are keen to attract the very best in sporting talent to our City, as well as foster tomorrow’s champions. This new grandstand will be a crucial part of the Regional Multicultural and Sporting Centre of Excellence we are building here at the Showground.

“We want grassroots and elite sports teams, their families and fans to all enjoy the high-quality sports and spectator facilities.

“Fairfield City Council is focused on providing sporting and recreation facilities that encourage families and friends to come together and be active.

“I thank the NSW Government for supporting our vision for the Showground and our City.”

The grandstand’s construction is the next stage of the $28 million Showground redevelopment, which already includes the completed festival arena, covered festival space, FIFA-accredited synthetic all-weather field, international turf sports field and multipurpose amenities building.

Under construction is an all-abilities playground at Deerbush Park, with walking/riding paths, splash pad, rope climbing course, flying fox, Liberty Swing, play equipment for children of all abilities, and accessible bathroom facilities.

A People’s Globe with multi-directional flag pole celebrating the City’s multicultural heritage is being built at the entrance to the Showground.
