Local cricket clubs and councils across NSW are set to benefit from new facilities and exciting programs to drive participation with the first projects announced from the $6 million NSW ICC World T20 Cricket Legacy Fund.

Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres and Cricket NSW CEO Andrew Jones today met with representatives from the Camden District Cricket Club and Campbelltown City Council to announce the first $1.96 million in grants for the fund.

Mr Ayres awarded the $100,000 grant to Campbelltown Council, one of 55 projects to be funded as part of the NSW Government’s successful bid for matches to be played in Sydney for the ICC World T20 2020 tournaments.

“The World T20 Legacy Fund will help local clubs and councils to improve cricket infrastructure, grow female participation and host cricket events across Regional NSW,” Mr Ayres said.

“The T20 Legacy Fund is about giving back to local cricket clubs, associations and local councils to drive participation, especially in our rising female stars.”

Campbelltown City Council will benefit from $100,000 worth of funding to improve facilitates at Memorial Oval, while Camden District Cricket Club will also receive the grant allowing them to enter a women’s side into the Thunder Girls Cricket league.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr George Brticevic said the NSW ICC World T20 Cricket Legacy Fund will inspire the next generation of cricketers by improving the quality and quantity of community facilities and will help attract world class cricket matches right across NSW.

“Cricket is just one of the many sports which unites communities across the state and gives male and female players a fantastic chance to build skills and be part of a team. Council is committed to improving the amenity of sporting facilities across our city to support participation in sport and a healthy lifestyle” Cr Brticevic said.

Cricket NSW Chief Executive Officer Andrew Jones said that the NSW ICC World T20 Cricket Legacy Fund will deliver significant benefits for local clubs and councils, helping to maximise the expected growth in participation resulting from hosting the tournament in Australia.

“With more girls and boys, women and men, of all ages playing cricket across NSW than ever, the fund will both support the growth of the sport in local communities and leave a lifelong legacy for one of the biggest sporting events this decade.”

ICC World T20 2020 Chief Executive Officer Nick Hockley said the initiative will help leave a lasting legacy for local communities beyond the tournament.

“The Local Organising Committee is committed to leaving a positive legacy for community cricket through hosting the ICC World T20 2020 in Australia. The NSW Government funding will help cricket clubs and councils to maximise the benefit of hosting 14 tournament matches in Sydney, and to support the growing participation in cricket.” Mr Hockley said.
