Work has commenced on a $1.2 million upgrade to the basketball and netball courts at Ford Park precinct in Merimbula.

The project was a promise of the NSW Government at the 2019 election and will involve the resurfacing of the courts, installation of a roof to provide an all-weather facility, new lighting and drainage improvements.

Member for Bega Andrew Constance met with club representatives and Council today to celebrate the start of work on the project.

“Netball and basketball are extremely popular on the south coast and I am pleased to be here to see the commencement of this project,” Mr Constance said.

“The upgrades to this precinct will improve the quality and quantity of games played at the venue and deliver on our promise to provide upgraded sporting facilities for local residents.

“Importantly, the project will also create jobs, providing an employment boost for the region as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Acting Minister for Sport Geoff Lee said the NSW Government was proud to support a project which will increase sports participation on the south coast.

“The upgrades to Ford Park will enable more people of all ages, genders and abilities on the south coast to participate in netball and basketball,” Mr Lee said.

“They will also enable the clubs to host regional events which attract visitors and encourage spending which in turn creates employment and a stronger local economy.”

Bega Valley Shire Council Mayor Councillor Russell Fitzpatrick said with more than 600 registered players between the two user clubs, the upgrade will be a fantastic addition to the local sports scene.

“Through the transformation into an all-weather facility, it opens up the exciting prospect of club competitions being run year-round and attracting regional events to our Shire,” Cr Fitzpatrick said.

“The renewal of the surface will greatly improve the safety of players and officials, extend its useful life significantly and reduce the maintenance burden on Council in the medium term.”

Nowra-based Edwards Constructions are undertaking the project with the assistance of local sub-contractors and suppliers.
