Extreme fun is back at Penrith

Published: 29 September 2023

Western Sydney residents have another place to cool off and beat the heat this summer with Penrith Whitewater Stadium re-opening today.

The re-opening comes in time for the school holidays and provides western Sydney residents with an exciting extreme sport option at the foot of the Blue Mountains.

Already a training base for Australia’s elite paddlers, including Olympic Gold Medalist and World Champion, Jess Fox, Penrith Whitewater Stadium officially re-opens to the public on Friday, 29 September with children over 12 and adults able to enjoy rafting on the rapids at the Stadium.

All rafters receive a safety briefing, followed by flatwater instruction before venturing onto the whitewater, with each raft holding up to eight people, including an experienced river guide. Bookings are essential. Visit https://www.sport.nsw.gov.au/penrithwhitewater for further information.

Minister for Sport Steve Kamper said:

“Summer is approaching and the weather is getting warmer.

“It’s fantastic to be able to re-open Penrith Whitewater Stadium in time for the school holidays and provide western Sydney residents with an extreme sport option.

“So, get down to the Stadium and enjoy an action-packed rafting experience at the best course in the Southern Hemisphere.”

Member for Penrith Karen McKeown:

“Penrith constantly swelters as summer approaches. Our Penrith White Water Stadium is the perfect spot to enjoy the action.

“It is also an ideal venue for families to relax even if you don’t paddle and take in the scenery.”

Chief Executive of the Office of Sport Karen Jones said:

“The facility has been closed over winter and we are excited to re-open to the general public.

“Visitors can enjoy the world-class facilities that are a legacy of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

“So, get your friends and family together and have a great day of fun on the rapids.”
