The Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (NSW) (GIPA Act) provides members of the public with a right of access to government information.
Under the GIPA Act, each NSW Government department and agency is required to publish an Agency Information Guide.
This Information Guide outlines:
- Our agency’s structure and functions.
- How our work affects the public.
- How the public can participate in policy development.
- The types of information we hold.
- How information can be accessed.
About the Office of Sport
The Office of Sport is the lead NSW Government agency for sport and active recreation. We are part of the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport.
Our purpose is “Everyone Plays Here” — a commitment to supporting all people, communities and organisations across NSW to enjoy and realise the benefits of participating in sport and active recreation. Participation can take many forms, from players and coaches to volunteers, partners, sponsors, media and fans.
We provide leadership and support to the sector through:

Information access
The Office of Sport holds a range of information related to its core functions. This section outlines the types of information we hold and how you can access it under the GIPA Act.
Type of information held
We hold information related to:
- Strategic planning and policy development

- Non-service delivery activities such as governance, reporting and compliance
We comply with the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (NSW) and the Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002 (NSW) when handling personal information.
Some information is made publicly available, while other types may be restricted due to privacy, confidentiality, or legal exemptions under the GIPA Act.
Accessing information under the GIPA Act
There are four ways to access government information held by the Office of Sport:
Open access information
We must publish certain categories of information free of charge, including:

Proactive release
We may publish additional information where appropriate and in the public interest. You can suggest information for release by contacting our Right to Information Officer.
Continuous disclosure
The Office of Sport is committed to improving transparency, participation, collaboration and innovation by increasing access to government information.
Continuous disclosure is a key component of our corporate governance framework. It supports accountability and integrity by ensuring that stakeholders and the public are kept informed about our work.

Informal requests
You can request information informally. If it’s clearly in the public interest and not sensitive, we’ll provide it free of charge. Conditions may apply for sensitive or confidential information.
Formal access applications
If the information is not available through the above methods, you can submit a formal application under the GIPA Act.
To apply:
- Submit a written request marked as a GIPA application
- Provide a postal address and enough detail to identify the information
- Pay the $30 application fee (cheque or credit card)

Fees and charges
- $30 application fee (covers first hour of processing)
- $30/hour for additional processing time
- 50% discount available for eligible applicants (e.g. pensioners, students, non-profits)
- No charge for the first 20 hours if requesting your own personal information
