Sport NSW and Penrith City Council to Host Girls Get Active Day

May 2018

Sport NSW and Penrith City Council have come together to present a Girls Get Active Day on Wednesday, 23 May at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. The event, designed to encourage more girls to benefit from participation in sport and recreation, will take place at the Sydney International Regatta Centre and involve 90 girls from local high-schools, four elite female athletes and five different sports.

The Girls Get Active event commences at 9:30am where athletes, Jane Howard (Dragon Boats), Lisa Griffith (CNSW Breakers & Sydney Thunder) and Olivia Wilson (Golf NSW) will engage in a panel discussion led by Olympian and 2017 NSW Athlete of the Year, Jessica Fox, to inspire the audience of female high-school students to lead active lives.

At the conclusion of the panel discussion, the students will have the opportunity to meet the panellists and experience the various sporting activities on offer including cricket, dragon boats, golf, kayaking and touch football.

Sport NSW and Penrith City Council are committed to supporting the future growth and development of sport and active recreation, which in turn sees people enjoy the benefits provided and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Girls Get Active events provide a unique opportunity for young females to engage with women achieving success in the sporting domain and to try a range of sports in a fun and safe environment, with each station facilitated by the panellists and/or staff from the state sporting organisations.

Sport NSW Chief Executive Officer Darren Simpson is thrilled to collaborate with Penrith City Council for the Girls Get Active Day and hopes the event encourages the female students to participate in sporting activities within their local community.

“Sport NSW is delighted to host this event in conjunction with Penrith City Council. I hope the successful young sports women, plus our dual Olympic Medallist MC in Jessica Fox, can inspire the girls to explore the pathways available to them and pursue their own sporting dreams,” Mr Simpson said.
