Olympic Venue Legacy on Show at National Championships

March 2017

The legacy of the Sydney 2000 Olympics will continue to be showcased, with the Sydney International Rowing Regatta and Australian Athletics Championships taking place at the NSW Government’s Olympic venues next week.

For the first time, the Junior and Open aged championships for able-bodied and para-athletes will be combined into an eight-day event at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. The event will attract more than 3,500 athletes, 300 officials and thousands of spectators, utilising Australia’s premier athletics venue.

The Sydney International Rowing Regatta will see nearly 600 races held across seven days at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith. In addition to the racing schedule, athlete and coach development activities will take place including injury prevention sessions and presentations from Rio 2016 athletes.

Chief Executive for the Office of Sport, Matt Miller, said that hosting events at our Olympic venues benefits the NSW sporting sector by providing access to world-class facilities and delivering opportunities for NSW based athletes to compete on home soil.

“Hosting the Australian Athletics Championships and Sydney International Rowing Regatta showcases our Olympic venues as premier locations for world-class events and activities. The NSW Government is proud to host such events, facilitating the high performance pathway for NSW athletes to participate in familiar surroundings with the support of friends and family.

“At a time where ex-Olympic and World Championship venues around the world are in a state of disrepair, the Sydney International Regatta Centre and Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre are visited by more than 750,000 participants and spectators per annum. These venues provide a range of sport and recreation opportunities for both the local community and elite athletes,” Mr Miller said
