Heathcote Public School students are set to benefit from new healthy meal options at the school canteen as well as a new $100 Active Kids Rebate for sporting costs.

NSW Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres joined Member for Heathcote Lee Evans to announce a $3,000 grant for the Heathcote Public School canteen to purchase new equipment to provide healthier meal choices for students.

“Providing children with healthier options in school canteens is just one of the ways we can move towards achieving our priority target to reduce childhood obesity by five per cent by 2025,” Mr Ayres said

“Obesity has significant health impacts for children with around one in five NSW children between the ages of five and 16 being overweight or obese and that’s why investments like these in new equipment will give access to a healthier range of food for students.”

Member for Heathcote Lee Evans said students involved in sport will also be eligible for an Active Kids Rebate announced as part of this year’s budget- putting $100 per school aged child back in the pocket of parents to help cover the cost of getting their kids into sport.

“This is a fantastic initiative which aims to reduce cost of living pressures for families and reduce barriers to healthy activity,” Mr Evans said.

“Whether your active child plays traditional sports like netball, football or basketball; or takes part in swimming classes, gymnastics or athletics, families will be able to claim up to $100 per school child, per calendar year from 1 January 2018 for after-school, weekend and school holiday sport and active recreation activities.

“The Active Kids rebate is an important part of our record $401 million sport budget which will invest in our major and community sporting facilities and encourage healthier lifestyles,” Mr Evans said.

“Best of all, this means every family will save with parents able to register online and can take a sports voucher to a registered sports club or provider to receive their rebate from 1 January 2018.
