Congratulations to NSW Office of Sport’s Hunter Aboriginal Development Officer, Gerald Bradshaw who was nominated as a finalist in the 2019 Hunter New England (HNE) Mental Health Awards for his work leading the Morisset Hospital Sport and Recreation initiative.
Gerald worked with HNE Local District Health Services staff Kate Forbes-Walker and Les Atkinson to establish the initiative which uses sport as a vehicle to support the mental health of people in Aboriginal communities through the ‘Sports Ability – Connecting the Dots sports program’.
The program was developed and delivered over five weeks to participants and staff at Morisset Hospital and had the highest number of participants for a sport program at Morisset Hospital Mental Health Unit.
Program partners included Morisset Mental Health Rehab and Aboriginal Mental Health Coordinator, NRL – Newcastle Game Development Office and The Big Issue - Street Soccer Coordinator (Newcastle).
The program and was nominated as a Finalist in the “Closing the Gap” category of the HNE Mental Health Awards which were held on 28 May.
