Last month more than 80 representatives of State Sporting Organisations attended the NSW Member Protection in Sport Network Forum to share their stories, insights and advice about mental health and sport.
Presenters included Lara Boyle, NSW Surf Life Saver of the Year 2017, Linda Sheahan from Beyond Blue and Emily Luke from NSW Ice Hockey.
Lara gave a moving and raw account of her lived experience with mental health, Linda explained what a mentally healthy workplace looks like and how sporting organisations can work towards it and Emily shared why sporting organisations need to care for their valued staff and volunteers.
NRL representatives, including former player David Shillington, spoke on the powerful NRL State of Mind Program, which is an education program to support positive mental health within the rugby league community.
With an estimated 45 per cent of people experiencing a mental health condition in their lifetime, the forum assisted State Sporting Organisations to support clubs and member associations to manage mental health issues within their sports.
