Youth Sport Leaders Scholarship Camp

May 2017

Young people between the ages of 16 and 22 years old in the Western Region may apply for a place at a Youth Sports Leaders Scholarship Camp to be held at Lake Burrendong Sport and Recreation Centre near Wellington.

At the camp, State Sporting Organisation officers will deliver sports specific training courses, and the Office of Sport will deliver careers, leadership and team building sessions, including challenging outdoor activities.

Eligibility criteria

Interested applicants are encouraged to apply if they meet the following criteria:

  • Aged between 16 and 22 at the time of the camp.
  • Reside in the area encircled by the towns of Lithgow, Boorowa, Young, Broken Hill, Lightning Ridge, Tenterfield, Armidale, Kandos.
  • Must be endorsed by a non-related community member.
  • Parental permission required for under 18 years’ old.

Applications

Applicants must choose one of the following sport packages that they wish to receive training in from the list below, and indicate this on their application.

Applications close on Thursday 29 June 2017 at 5:00pm. Successful applicants will be informed by Friday 30 June 2017.

AFL NSW/ACT Logo

AFL NSW/ACT – AFL Community Coach Level 1

Four hours to complete the course, which includes 2 hours of theory and 2 hours of practical. Fundamental learning skills of AFL. This will aid in delivering to school students.

Two hour AFL Community Coaching Online course.
Basketball NSW Logo

Basketball NSW – Community Coach Course 

Topics covered:  Introduction to basketball, rules, fundamental basketball skills, coaching skills, planning a session and game coaching. This is a theory course, and a short assessment at the end.

Cricket NSW Logo

Cricket NSW – In-service for MILO in2CRICKET, MILO T20 Blast and Sporting Schools programs

This will not only help deliver/volunteer at these programs in their community but help with casual employment when finished at school. It involves 2 online courses (about 1 hour each) and then 4 hours practical (2 hours on both).

You will need to register and join Cricket Coaches Australia prior to doing the course, which is free. Each online course should only take about 1 hour to complete. Details will be forwarded to successful applicants.

Western Football NSW – Grassroots Coaching certificate and skills training workshop

These fully practical workshops encourage the coach to develop practices that are based on fun and natural development to help players build a love for the game.

Hockey NSW – Level 1 Coaching Course

Topics discussed during course: skill component, playing structures, new terminologies, how to conduct a training session, handout of resources.

Two online courses which take 2 hours each to complete.  Details will be forwarded to successful applicants.
Jack Newton Junior Golf Logo

Jack Newton Junior Golf – Community Instructor Course

Practical assessment during the camp. During the practical training student will learn: Grip, Stance, Ball position, Chipping, Pitching, Putting, Long shot, Golf terms

Three hour online course to be completed before camp. Details will be sent to successful applicants.
Netball NSW Logo

Netball NSW – Practical Coaching Course  

Skill & drill session to take away. On court application. Attack, defence and shooting court specifics.

Online Foundation Coaching course. Cost for this course will be covered for successful applicants. Approximately 2–3 hours. All applicants must be financial members of Netball NSW.

NSW Rugby Union Logo

NSW Rugby Union (NSW Waratahs) – Coaching Kids Rugby Course

On completion of this module participants will:

  • Have an understanding of the ARU Pathway and Education Framework.
  • Understand ‘what kids want’.
  • Know the roles and responsibilities of a junior coach.
  • Have an understanding of the coaching process.
  • Have an awareness of teaching skills.

Be aware of the role that coach-referee relationships have on positive kid’s rugby outcomes.

Approximately 1.5 hours of online modules including safe techniques for playing rugby. ARU minimum requirement to coach or officiate in tackle rugby matches.
