Education and training

Education and training can make all the difference to the success of a sports club. From member protection and fair play to club management, accreditation, child protection, healthy clubs, sports integrity, safety and governance, Sport and Recreation can connect you to a number of practical and hands-on courses for sports club committee members and volunteers. Some of these are online, others are face-to-face. All of them offer in-depth training and knowledge so you can better run your club.

Before you start, always check with your state and national sporting body first to see what courses they have available.

Member protection and fair play

Learn how to make sport inclusive, safe and fair with Play by the Rules free online courses in child protection and harassment , complaint handling and the member protection information officer.

For information and training on making sport child-safe, the Office of the Children’s Guardian run regular child safe workshops and online courses on the Working With Children Check.

Club management

Need help managing your club?

The Institute of Community Directors Australia offers workshops and online learning in governance, the role of the director and, effective meetings and more.

Sport NSW can help improve your management skills with a range of professional development workshops.

Sports Community offer a variety of podcasts, webinars and online workshops.

Coaching

Australia’s National Coaching Accreditation Scheme offers onsite and online courses, including the Community Coaching General principles course. Run by the Australian Sports Commission, it has the participation of over 70 sports.

Officiating

The National Officiating Accreditation Scheme offers accreditation training, including the Introductory Level Officiating online course for officials across all sports. 

Sports integrity

Learn how to recognise and report match-fixing at the National Sport Integrity Unit’s Keeping Sport Honest e-learning program.

The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority provides Level 1 and Level 2 anti-doping online courses.

Healthy clubs

For a healthier club, register with Finish with the Right Stuff and learn about healthy food and drink options you can promote at your club.

For alcohol management accreditation, head to Good Sports.

Safety

Sports Medicine Australia has a wide range of sports safety related training, including injury prevention and management, drugs in sport, nutrition and taping.

For work, health and safety training, Workcover NSW holds regular webinars.
